Clean Fuels 101 Webinar Series

Join Western Washington Clean Cities for a five-part webinar series on clean fuels in Washington State!

November 15: Introduction To Washington's Clean Fuels

10 - 10:45 AM PST

We'll start off the series with an introduction to alternative fuels, including current federal and state legislation and incentives, the air quality impacts of using alternative fuels in comparison to petroleum-based fuels, and the greenhouse gas impacts of each fuel based on how they're produced and transported to Washington.

November 29: Fleet Efficiencies

10 - 10:45 AM PST

In this session, we'll discuss strategies, policies and technologies that can help maximize the fuel efficiency of your fleet.

A sustainable transportation policy framework called Avoid-Shift-Improve sets the stage for fleet managers, decision makers and drivers to work together to get the most out of every gallon of fuel. Using case studies, we'll explain in detail several fleet efficiency tools such as idle reduction technologies and telematics to demonstrate return-on-investment and the amount of fuel that can be conserved. After all, the cleanest, greenest and cheapest gallon of fuel is the one that is never burned!

December 6: Gaseous Fuels -- Natural Gas & Propane Autogas

10 - 10:45 AM PST

The third webinar in our series will delve into the gaseous alternative fuels world of compressed natural gas (CNG), liquified natural gas (LNG), propane autogas (LPG), and their lower-carbon counterparts renewable natural gas (RNG) and renewable propane.

For each of these fuels, we will discuss its best use cases, tailpipe emissions profile, and its relative benefits as well as potential challenges or limitations. We will also talk about the various means of production of each fuel, and their relative carbon intensity scores -- a measure of the fuel’s overall greenhouse gas footprint.

December 13: Biomass Fuels -- Biodiesel, Renewable Diesel & Ethanol

10 - 10:45 AM PST

This session focuses on biodiesel, renewable diesel and ethanol -- the three main alternative fuels made from biomass feedstocks such as plants, animal tallow, used cooking oil, wood chips and other cellulosic fibers.

We will discuss the lifecycle greenhouse gas footprints for all of the most common feedstock sources for each type of fuel, along with the air quality impacts of their associated tailpipe emissions, relative benefits and limitations of each fuel type, and information about the best use cases and best practices for fleets in Western Washington.

December 20: Electric Vehicles & Hydrogen Fuel Cells

10 - 10:45 AM PST

The final webinar in our series focuses on the rapidly-advancing technologies of electric, hybrid electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. We will give a technical overview of how each technology works inside a vehicle, and the current state of the art. Various sources of electricity and hydrogen will also be discussed, along with information about the carbon intensities associated with different pathways. This information can be used to inform decision-making to help our region drive into the electric future as cleanly and sustainably as possible!
