Natural Gas Production
Between 80%–90% of the natural gas used in the United States is domestically produced. Natural gas is primarily made up of methane, with low concentrations of other hydrocarbons, water, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen, and some sulfur compounds.
Conventional Natural Gas Production
Natural gas is primarily extracted from gas and oil wells. Gas trapped in subsurface porous rock reservoirs is extracted via drilling. Additionally, advances in hydraulic fracturing technologies have enabled access to large volumes of natural gas from shale formations.
